If this sounds like you, you are in a group of thousands of other people. Their dream is running their own business, because the advantages of having a business are many. If you plan to be an entrepreneur and have a business, it is important to understand how to initiate a business.
I must have dozed off because when I came to I already had ‘EMAIL DECENTRALIZED FOREVER’ stenciled on my shoulder. It looked pretty good so far. The little flying envelope was really cute too. BeeBee mentioned that the next step was the point of no return. I eagerly nodded and told her to get going with the permanent ink. We started chatting about my tattoo choice and I told her the history of Email Marketing and how I had chosen to have my tattoo done at their store because of their creative e-newsletter. She told me that a fellow name Buzz took care of all the marketing but he was out on an errand right now.
Operating a business is similar to going on a safari to Africa. If I asked you “How much did the safari cost?” you would simply add up the receipts for the trip and tell me the cost. As a new small business owner, you are in an adventure of business. Any expense that you pay in order to be on your adventure can be claimed as a business expense.
Once you have a plan you can execute it by starting with creating your designs, creating a marketing plan and executing it. You will also need to build a blog/website so if you don’t know how to do this yourself then you will need to find a web designer to do it for you.
The long answer: I learned what I needed to know as I needed to know it. Eg., when my first book – “Zen and The Art of Writing” – came out in 1984, I did not know much about marketing. While I had studied it in college, I did not know the “street smart level” of marketing.
Be confident. It is difficult talking to investors and convincing them to put money into your business. But there’s one solution to this: you have to be confident in yourself, your abilities, and in the potential of your business. You have to believe that you are a good manager, that you have the right skills and abilities to make the business grow, and that the business has a promising future. This is better than anxiously pleading with them or shyly asking them to make an investment. Do not let yourself think that you or your business do not deserve the financial aid that investors are willing to give. Just think that your business is an amazing opportunity and they’ll be making a mistake not to invest in it.
So, the next time you place an ad anywhere, or hire a marketing company, ask them what their typical response rates are. If they can’t, or won’t tell you, go somewhere else, you are in the wrong place.
